AND.... no one cares. This isnt going to matter to anyone but Tim and I. But figuring out how to integrate a boring ass thing like watching grown men standing 20 yards from a target shooting nothing but 9s into interesting archery videos seems like a good challenge. Also, it will make us better archers. and yes I realize that target isn't the Vegas 3 spot we are using.

I used to kinda think Brandon was a tool but always enjoyed his content and have really took a liking to him after seeing him and Tim’s and Josh’s and James’s interactions! I’m a big enough man to admit when I was wrong, and I was wrong about Brandon he seems like a really kool dude, highly unlikely this comment reaches you but just needed to put this out there lol 😂

Mechanicals are great if you never have to take a steep angle or 1/4 away shot. If you can get a clean broadside they rarely fail. I am sticking with a fixed blade montec because the less things I have to worry about in the moment lining up a shot the better.

I agree that its situational which works better. For me, I have lost deer with mechanicals due to deflection from small limbs that caused the mechanical to open. I hunt in theick cover in Maine with a low deer population. I also had a full passthrough with an iron will wide and clipped the top of a lung and we never recovered that deer, even after 3 miles and a tracking dog. I have said both; i should have had a mechnaical and I should have used a fixed blade. I guess were always learning.

I have the Bowtech Solution and I have mixed feelings about it myself. Like I wish I never got it. It is very fast, smooth. The main thing I hate more than anything is the grip. It is to narrow (thin) for me. I like the fat grip like I had on my Matthews Outback. I wish I could find some one to machine me a fat wooden grip for the Bowtech. Really don’t want to use bat wrap but I guess I’m going to try it. I like how you kept saying it was you and not blaming Bowtech, everyone has their own preference. Good video

I'm switching back to the Sevr Hybrid this year. I'm still going to carry a few Kudu points, but my primary broadhead will be the Sevr. Lusk testing poves they are capable. The kills I've had with mechanicals have been easy to track and under 40yds.

Having the ability to sharpen and reuse my single bevels will keep me in the fixed head group. Getting an absolutely terrifyingly sharp broadhead is huge for me and I can’t sharpen an expandable.

Ok KE will change if the bow is not tuned correctly!!!!! It is simple physics Troy!!! If your bow is not tuned well it will change your KE!!!!!! It is right in the equation! 1/2 MV2 and especially if the V is changed! Because it is squared! So a badly tuned bow throws a slower arrow which in turn creates less velocity and this affects and decrease your KE someone needs to go back to physics class!!!

I guarantee, any sevr, running low profile vanes, is going to be way more accurate at 100 yards than the big ass planning surface of an iron will wide and the larger vanes required to steer it, and the real difference is seen when the wind picks up, then it’s night and day as to which is more accurate. And the shit ton of vane makes its louder than a fighter jet taking off. Sound matters when you’re shooting at a deer. And lets forget about sevr, use a thorn broadhead. They have zero exposed surface, and you can run very minimal vane, and have a super sleek, streamlined arrow that is easily as accurate as a field point. Bottom line: -field point accuracy - quieter minimal vanes -ability to buck the wind - larger cut diameter Trump fixed blades all day.

Went down the heavy arrow single bevel rabbit hole as well ended up going back to a 3 blade setup then back to a small expandable with a good moderate weight moderate foc setup and everything I have hit with it has been recovered. I have talk to a lot of dog trackers in different states and one thing I have learned is when shooting at a big buck your better off back a few inches vs being forward a few inches. A buck cannot survive a gut shot, he's hurt he runs 100-150 yards and beds down and watches his back trail. By morning he's gone septic and if he's still alive he can't get up or move around very well. A gut shot often has a lot higher recovery then a shoulder shot if a dog is called out.

Saying an animal moved b4 your arrow got there is also the ultimate excuse for a bad shot. In reality in most cases you would never know if an animal moved b4 your arrow got there. Its the ultimate excuse because it makes you feel better about a bad shot and im sure hunters abuse that excuse allll the time

Seems like a lot of people are coming full circle back to expandables. Some people never left but I think some of the gear junkies really got into the heavy arrow movement, myself included. I picked up some Grim Reaper 1 3/8” like two years ago and think I will be using those this season. I have a short draw length but should have enough KE with my setup to put down whitetail.

Aiming just above the front leg with a cut on contact fixed head seems to either kill them quickly or if the arrow doesn’t hit its mark, the animal has a higher chance of surviving. Where as with a mechanical most people already aim at the crease or behind it, which can work out great, but there is a higher chance of a gut shot if the arrow misses its mark resulting in a much longer blood trail and drawn out death. Just my two cents and why I prefer fixed heads and aiming further forward.

Last 3 years for elk I have in my quiver a couple mechanical heads and three fixed . My mechanicals are at lease a two inch cut or better just for the reason you pointed out I had not so good shots and still recovered the animals do to the wound channel was so big

Great stuff, Brandon - really fun discussion. I agree with you that a three blade rear deploy mechanical (at least for whitetails) is a great choice. The deadmeat v2 and megameats inflict incredible damage (and pass throughs) in my experience (29"DL@60lbs), but I understand people's reluctance as the megameat was mangled after I put it through a doe. They both fly great. I bought a few Sevr 1.5 hybrids after Lusk's review. I shot them out to 50 yards and they're dead on. Sevr quality is on another level IMO.

I feel like missing back is only more probable, if you are aiming for the lungs? Honestly, I think if you are aiming 3 inches behind the crease, Use a large cut mechanical, because they do a great job there in most situations. However, If you need the ability for a quartering to, or your aim point is straight up the leg I would stay with the iron will for sure.

This will be my 18th year bow hunting and I've been down just about every rabbit hole there is with arrow set up and broadheads. You're planning for a failure.. I'm never ever going to plan for my arrow to bounce out if my shot is off a little. This seems completely silly to me. Might as well put a spork on the end of a shovel handle and go gigging. The BROADHEAD absolutely needs to be the strongest, most durable component of an arrow. Personally I use the Magnus Blackhornet Ser Razor, total arrow weight is 570gr (30" DL, 74lb DW) at 260fps. My goal is to crush everything I hit. Quartering to, away, broadside, up/down angle, doesn't matter. Aim for the exit hole and the dirt. Pass though every single time. I have chopped leg bones in half on the exit side and still put the arrow in the dirt and the broadhead is still in relatively good shape.

Push test are nothing like an arrow at speed.. I 100% agree use the energy in the animal not in the dirt.. I shoot 1 3/8 grim reapers for everything, but I'm not short draw or low poundage . You can't compare a 1 1/2. Two blade vs a 2 inch 3 blade..

  • @denverlewis3486

Shooting fixed heads on flat ground during practice is fine. When you get in the woods and you are trying to lean around a tree or duck under a limb, your form breaks down. When your form breaks down and you are not shooting perfectly, the fixed head will not be as accurate as the mechanical. In the woods in a hunting situation is where it is most important, not 100 yards in the yard.

  • @matthewepperson6489
    @matthewepperson6489 10 днів тому

Is the issue tracking, penetration, blood trail, deflection or pass through? My hunting experience is very limited on firing a projectile into an animal. Distance and force is determinate on arrow weight and speed. I've used Slick Trick Magnum 100 G with 600 gr at 165 fps and it went through a 350 lbs hog double lung and it went 50 yards. Mind you the shot was from 25 yards. If i can only hunt 1 time per year (Elk, black bear, elk ) and i am training 5 days a week every week and i have 1 opportunity to release an arrow, i would rather have confidence in a single bevel Ironwill that needs very low force to penetrate and can go through bone at a longer distance than hope for the best at a farther distance where the energy of the arrow has reduced as well as speed where a mechanic broadhead which needs more force to deploy might not have the energy to engage at impact. Failure rate of more moving parts(mechanical) will always be a high stat then no moving parts (Fixed). Remi Warren has a story from last year of hunting a mule deer( i believe. He has more hunts in 1 year than i have in my life) with mechanical at 5 yards and it didn't deploy when he fired the arrow. It ricocheted off the back of the mule deer i believe. He is THE GOLD STANDARD hunter and i extremely proficient in shooting a bow. Tracking is environmental and a hunter has to be aware of that factor prior to stepping out of the truck to understand weather and land conditions to understand the scenario of the hunt if he or she releases an arrow or shoots a bullet. A hunter has to have a mental evaluation of all factors prior to releasing a shot based off the situation and decide if he or she is willing to accept the possibilities of the results if they fire , good and bad. Oh Brandon sorry for missing the live feed. Daughter's softball game trumped the live feed. You being a new father i am sure you will agree. Glad to see the video and wish ya the best on your mechanical journey again. Look for to the recap after your hunting season to see if you perspective stays or changes.
